During the past few years, I have accumulated more than a dozen unread books. It does not seem likely that I will be able to reduce that stack anytime soon, but I still intend to read them. I am what Japanese call a tsundoku: a lazy book collector. Cannabis certainly fits into that category, too. Many strains have captured my attention while I was out shopping, but I reluctantly let a sexier, stinkier bud push me down the queue. Having read Friday Night Lights, I wondered the same thing I wondered after reading Strawberry Diesel: Why did it take me so long to give Strawberry Diesel a shot?
Strawberry Cough and New York City Diesel are like a black-and-tan beer mix, with thick, distinct aromas and flavors that reflect their fruity, rubbery roots in a way that preserves their individuality. My favorite quality of Strawberry Cough is its rich, thick strawberry milk syrup smell, which is perfectly balanced with the tart, rubbery qualities of Diesel at the end, so that neither strain’s unique flavor is compromised. I spent several minutes at home simply marveling at that rich, thick smell.
In the day, Strawberry Diesel gives you the right amount of energy without cumbersome side effects like anxiety, heavy dry mouth or overthinking how to play the next song. There isn’t a fruity version of Diesel that I dislike, even though I have a lot more searching to do. I also prefer Cherry Diesel to caffeine for the second half of my day once I’m home from work. It has a sweet-smelling kick and can replace caffeine for the first half of the day. The effects of Strawberry Diesel are extremely similar in Denver, and the drug can be obtained more easily.
There are Strawberry Diesel strains available at Colorado Harvest Company, Denver Dispensaries, Denver Kush Bar, Euflora, Redeye Releaf, Levels, and Whole Meds, in addition to the PAX pods that are sold at Urban Dispensary and High West Cannabis. There are genetics that are similar to those of White Strawberry Diesel, which is available at Good Chemistry.
Observations: Strawberry Diesel buds can produce cone- and heart-shaped buds, and the plant grows relatively round, plump, and dense for a sativa. There’s moderate trichome coverage and a lackluster wintergreen color, but it’s not obviously a beauty. So don’t be fooled.
Smell: Both NYC Diesel and Strawberry Cough preserve their signature smells without overwhelming one another. Notes of sweet, syrupy fruits are present in Strawberry Cough. Diesel has a sour, tangier scent, reminiscent of Skunk, rubber and just a dash of black pepper, which cuts through the sweetness.
Flavor: Although the luscious strawberry notes don’t come across quite as much when you smoke (or vape), they’ll still stick to your tongue and are more noticeable in the joint. Unlike other cannabis strains, Diesel has stronger flavors, with a sour, tangy flavor that is followed by a dank, floral finish.
Effects: The uptick expected from Diesel and Cough strains isn’t as strong as we might expect, but it makes up for its lack of energy with its focus. This high is sweet and uplifting without pushing you over the edge (though you can certainly push yourself over the edge yourself), making you feel a sense of productivity without making you nervous, allowing you to concentrate on tasks and avoid boring conversations.
